Ending a pregnancy in the Netherlands — questions and concerns

Legality and safety
Is it definitely legal if I'm coming from abroad?
Yes, entirely. A procedure carried out in the Netherlands complies with Dutch law, and Polish legislation imposes no criminal liability on a woman for ending her own pregnancy, including abroad. More: legal questions.
Will anyone back home find out?
No. Medical records are protected by Dutch medical confidentiality and the GDPR. No information reaches authorities in your home country — health insurers, social security or your employer.
Is the procedure safe?
Yes. The clinic has been running since 1970, with over 55 years of experience, a licence from the Dutch Ministry of Health and IGJ inspectorate oversight. The success rate is 99.9%.
The procedure
Does the procedure hurt?
You sleep throughout and feel nothing — the procedure is done under sedation or general anaesthetic. Once you wake you may have cramps similar to period pain, for which you are given pain relief.
Up to which week of pregnancy is this possible?

Will I be able to get pregnant in future?
Yes. A properly performed procedure does not affect fertility — ovulation usually returns within 2–4 weeks, and another pregnancy is possible as soon as your next cycle.
Cost and practicalities
What does it cost?
The cost depends on how far along you are and on the method. Always included: the ultrasound, anaesthesia and follow-up appointment. For those insured in the Netherlands the procedure is free. Full price list: procedure prices.
Do I have to travel alone?
You don't have to — and equally, you don't have to bring anyone. You can have someone with you, and if you would rather come alone, the clinic staff are with you at every stage of the visit.
What if I change my mind just before the procedure?
It is your decision at every stage. You can stop at any point, without giving a reason and with no consequences.
