Abortion methods at our clinic in the Netherlands

At our abortion clinic in Utrecht we carry out terminations by vacuum aspiration and by instrumental procedure, from 6 to 22 weeks. The doctor always chooses the method individually, after the ultrasound. Safety, discretion and your comfort come first.

In brief
  • Vacuum aspiration up to 12 weeks (5–10 min)
  • Instrumental D&E up to 22 weeks (15–25 min)
  • The doctor always chooses the method, after an ultrasound
  • Both methods: 99.9% effective

Two methods

The doctor chooses the method — individually, after the ultrasound

Both methods are performed under anaesthesia by specialists with many years of practice. You feel no pain.

First trimester · up to 12 weeks

Vacuum aspiration

The most widely used method in the world, recommended by the WHO. It gently empties the uterus using controlled suction. The procedure takes 5–10 minutes and is done under sedation — at most you usually feel mild discomfort, similar to period cramps.

Second trimester · 13–22 weeks

Instrumental procedure (D&E)

A specialist surgical procedure (dilation and evacuation) used in more advanced pregnancy, carried out only by experienced doctors. The Netherlands is one of the few countries offering it this late. Always under anaesthesia — you sleep and feel nothing.

Anaesthesia

Your comfort comes first

You choose the form of anaesthesia together with the doctor during your consultation. An anaesthetist on site oversees its safety.

Intravenous sedation

Given through a drip — you drift into a light sleep and remember nothing of the procedure. You wake a few minutes later.

General anaesthetic

You sleep through the entire procedure. Recommended beyond 13 weeks — it removes any sensation of pain completely.

How the visit unfolds
